With the Skills feature in Veras, you can match shifts to staff based on qualifications. This helps ensure that sensitive roles—like Director of Care—are only filled by team members with the proper certifications and training.
Step-by-step instructions
1. Go to your Community settings.
2. Scroll down to find the Skills Management section, and click on the Skills dropdown to expand it.
3. You will see a list of any skills that have already been set up for your facility, with options to edit or archive any existing skill. You can click Create new to create a new skill.
4. Give your new skill a name, then click Create Skill.
Note: If your account is integrated with an HRIS system such as UKG or ADP, you will see the option to Auto-assign from integrations. This will display a list of all job positions that are being sent over from your HRIS, and you can select one or more positions in the list to auto-assign this skill to any staff who hold the selected position(s).
5. With your skill successfully created, go to your Positions settings.
6. You can add required skills to new or existing positions. To add to an existing position, click on that position in the list. To add a new position, click the + Position button.

7. With your desired position expanded, scroll to find the Skills dropdown, and click to expand it.
8. Select the skills you would like to be required for this position's shifts.
9. Click Save to save your changes to the position.
10. Lastly, you need to assign the new skill(s) to the applicable staff members. To do this, go to the Team area.
11. Click on the name of your desired staff member.
12. In the drawer that appears, click Add under the Skills section.
13. Begin typing the name of the desired skill, and you'll see any matching results appear. You can also Create a new skill from here if you'd like.
14. Once the appropriate skill(s) are selected, click Save to apply these to the staff member.
In our example, we indicated that the DOC skill is required for Director of Care (DOC) shifts. This means that only staff members who hold this skill can be be scheduled for shifts of this type!
