How to Unassign Shifts

Unassigning a shift removes it from a staff member's schedule and moves it back to Open Shifts — it doesn't delete the shift. Use this when a staff member can no longer work a shift and you want it filled by someone else.

Before you start

  • Unassigning moves the shift to Open Shifts — the shift stays on the schedule so it can be filled. If you want to remove it from the schedule entirely, use Delete shifts from the same three-dot menu, or see How to Delete Shifts.

Unassign a single shift

Use this when you need to remove one specific shift from a staff member.

  1. Click Schedule in the left navigation.

  2. Find the shift you want to unassign and click on it to open Shift Details.

  3. Click the dropdown next to the staff member's name.

  4. Select Unassigned.

The shift moves out of the staff member's row and into the Open Shifts section at the top of that position group.

Unassign all shifts for an employee

Use this to remove all of an employee's shifts within a date range at once — for example, when a staff member leaves or goes on extended leave.

This replaces all assigned shifts in the date range you select with open shifts. Double-check the date range before you click Unassign shifts.

  1. Click Schedule in the left navigation.

  2. Find the employee whose shifts you want to unassign.

  3. Click the three-dot icon (⋮) to the right of their name.

  4. Select Unassign shifts from the menu.

  5. Set the Date range for the shifts you want to unassign.

  6. Click Unassign shifts.

Note: All shifts in that date range move to Open Shifts — they are not deleted.

If you want to remove those shifts from the schedule entirely, choose Delete shifts from the same three-dot menu instead.

Common questions

Q: What's the difference between Unassign shifts and Delete shifts?

A: Unassign shifts keeps the shift on the schedule but removes the staff member — the shift moves to Open Shifts so it can be filled. Delete shifts removes the shift from the schedule entirely. Both options appear in the employee's three-dot menu. If you need to delete, see How to Delete Shifts.

Q: Where do unassigned shifts go?

A: They move to the Open Shifts row at the top of the staff member's position group. From there, you can fill them manually or share them with eligible staff for pickup.

Q: Will the staff member be notified that their shift was unassigned?

A: No — Veras does not push a notification when a shift is unassigned. The shift will no longer appear in the staff member's Veras app the next time they open it.

Q: Can I unassign shifts for just draft shifts, not posted ones?

A: The Unassign shifts function unassigns all shifts in the selected date range regardless of posted status. If you only want to affect draft shifts, unassign each one individually using the Shift Details method above.
